Frequently Asked Questions

Most Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) for castor seed farming, covering various aspects from cultivation to marketing.

General Information & Crop Characteristics

Castor seed farming involves cultivating the castor bean plant (Ricinus communis) for its seeds, which are processed to extract castor oil.

Castor oil has diverse applications, including industrial lubricants, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and biodiesel production.

Castor thrives in warm, tropical, and subtropical climates with well-drained, sandy loam to loamy soils. It tolerates some drought but prefers adequate moisture during the growing season.
Cultivation Practices

Land preparation involves clearing, plowing, and harrowing to create a well-prepared seedbed. Incorporating organic matter improves soil fertility.

Irrigation is crucial during the initial growth stages and flowering. However, castor is relatively drought-tolerant. Avoid waterlogging.
Harvesting and Post-Harvest Management

Capsules turn brown and begin to split when mature. Harvest before complete splitting to prevent seed loss.
Economic Aspects and Marketing

Yield varies depending on the variety, growing conditions, and management practices, but yields can range from 1,000 to 2,500 kg/hectare.

Potential buyers include oil extraction companies, pharmaceutical industries, cosmetic manufacturers, and export markets. You can always sell your seeds to Sôlt Africana Limited, provided the seeds are ISCC certified.
Safety Concerns

Yes, castor seeds contain ricin, a toxic protein. Handle seeds with care and avoid ingestion.

Wear gloves and protective clothing when handling seeds. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Store seeds safely away from children and animals.
Seed Selection

Purchase seeds from reputable seed suppliers, agricultural research institutions, or Sôlt Africana Limited website online and at its seed distribution centers.
